Universal media disk (UMD)

The basic function of PSP gaming and movie watching, is all in the small, compact UMD disk.  These UMDs are small, and come in a "protective" little case, to be inserted into the PSP.  On this page, we will show you how to insert your UMD properly, and show you the many advantages that these miniature disks possess.

UMDs alow you as a PSP gamer to play the games you want.  They also allow you to watch full feature length movies, formatted for the PSP.  What you might not already know is that they can also be used to UPDATE your PSP Firmware software.

As you can see, these UMDs are very small in size, so you should be very careful when handelling them.  They all have a little, "rhombus" shaped opening on the back side of the disk's case.  This is where the laser inside your PSP reads through to the disk.  Do not poke your fingers in this open section, or it could cause your disk to become scratched.

UMDs can be very expensive, so do your research before just going out and buying some random game you've never heard about.  You can do this from this site.

The following helps to show you how to use your UMD:

  1. Slide the open latch on the top of the PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) to open the disc cover.
  2. Insert the disc with the label facing the back of the PSP® system. Slide the disc down the metal guides and press down until fully inserted. You should hear a slight click, indicating that the disc is held in place.
  3. Close the disc cover.
